Barrister Paul Phillips, Mr. Frank Bower
The scammer claiming to be barrister Paul Phillips is really one
of the scummiest slime. In this sequence of 7 emails, he actually conned
an Indian lawyer (we've replaced his real name with "John Doe") into sending him
5,000 UK Pounds, and then emailed asking for more! We at CFR actually spoke with
"Paul Phillips" (see the
transcripts here). He's very persistent and very criminal in his scams purporting to be from the "UK
Lottery". Of course, there is no such legal lottery by this name. And you
won their "Annual Free Lotto"! Imagine, a lottery that gives away
millions, yet no one buys a ticket.
Don't EVER send money to cover fees, taxes, courier or ANYTHING
with a lottery. NO legitimate lottery would ask you to pay for those
things!
Note the usual clues to an obvious fraud that we
have highlighted in the
letter; keep confidential, selected by a random computer lottery of email
addresses, no website of their own, use of free hotmail/yahoo email accounts,
numerous misspellings, poor grammar and punctuation, etc. And wouldn't you find
it interesting, that you've NEVER heard of this promo, despite all the "Major
Sponsors". Not a very successful promotion or else just a scam.

Common signs that it is a scam:

the return email addresses are free Yahoo email accounts,

The recipient "won" without buying a ticket (so where does the
money come from?)

"For security reasons" you're not allowed to talk to anyone
about it (especially the police or consumerfraudreporting.org!) - which ought to
be odd since lotteries thrive on publicity!
